↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The paper explains Sherfield's beliefs that self-esteem needs are part of the basic necessities like food and shelter. The paper explains Sherfield's treatment of the complex psychological issue of self-esteem and discusses his many real-life examples. The paper also notes the distinctions between this work and that of "The Self" by Jonathan Brown.

From the Paper:

"Author Robert Sherfield begins his self-help tome The Everything Self-Esteem Book admitting that self-esteem has been getting a 'bad rap' in the media (Sherfield 6). The self-esteem movement has been accused of fostering overly high expectations and laziness in the newest generation of teens and 'tweens, of 'Oprah-izing' the media, and has been relentlessly parodied on almost every major comedy show. But Sherfield argues that building healthy self-esteem is not selfish, or something to be mocked. Rather, a person with high-self esteem and a realistic self-concept is "able to see the good in others and the world around" (Sherfield i). As a result he or she is more forgiving of others' faults as well as more forgiving of him or herself."
