This paper uses textual evidence from Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" to illustrate how Bronte uses Heathcliff, Catherine, and Edgar to represent the three major aspects of the elegy. It discusses how Heathcliff, with his animalistic nature, represents both nature and death; how Edgar, with his proper behavior, represents society and how Catherine, struggling between the two men and their love for her, represents the person who descends and ascends in elegiac works. It also analyzes how this applies to Bronte's theory of elegy as a whole.From the Paper:
"Despite the fact that Wuthering Heights is considered a classic, Gothic romance, Heathcliff is far removed from the type of character we consider to be synonymous with the romantic hero. Heathcliff could easily be likened to the Byronic hero, with his extreme broodiness and melancholy. Yet, even this heroic model does not fully encapsulate his severe, animalistic personality. When Mr. Earnshaw first introduces his family to young Heathcliff, Earnshaw remarks, "...it's as dark almost as if it came from the devil" (pg 29). The key word in this statement may appear to be "devil," as it can be indicative of someone who is both wily and evil, but the word that is truly critical to this passage is "it's." Feb 12, 2005 I am currently enrolled as a sophomore at the University of Maine at Farmington as a Secondary Education-English major with a 4.0 GPA. I also attended Ithaca College my freshman year, where I had a 3.5 GPA my first semester, and a 4.0 GPA my second semester.
