"The social movement among Mexican Americans was extremely difficult because of several factors, the most important of which may have been demographics. Traditionally Mexican American communities arose separate of each other in the Southwestern sector of the United States. California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas saw the biggest shifts of Mexican communities within their state borders. Mobilizing such a diverse group of individuals with different interests was extremely difficult because during the onset of the 1960s there were neither unifying issues nor identity for all community members on a national level to connect with. In essence, what Mexican Americans suffered from was a lack of social unity due to a national level identity crisis. Garcia explains that the root problem is that Mexican Americans did not know who they were; their social heritage was stuck behind a facade of intermingled shame and distance from their heritage."
