The paper discusses how, in "The Awakening", Kate Chopin uses the main character, Edna, to present the basic views of society towards women. The paper portrays the independent role sought by Edna in the society where a woman was expected to dedicate all her time and efforts into being a mother and housewife.
From the Paper:
"During Chopin's time period, people considered women to be weak, dependent and nothing but a housewife or a mother. Of course today this opinion has changed. Some women give up the job of being a mother to a nanny, and being wives by getting a divorce. Also nowadays, a woman is not afraid to show her strength; for some women seem to be stronger than their husbands. In The Awakening Chopin uses the main character Edna in order to present the basic views of society towards women. She portrays how society accepts and doesn't accept the female position to be. Chopin's novel, created before its time, comments on the different lifestyles of women."
