Rural Towns: One Big Family
An analysis of the portrayal of small town life in "Shoot the Moon" by Billie Letts.
993 words (approx. 4 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses how in "Shoot the Moon" Billie Letts uses the setting of small town DeClare, Oklahoma to show that small towns are characterized by a protective and unified population that is not present in metropolitan cities. The paper looks at how Letts uses a murder in DeClare to show how the population is forced to band together against common foes or a catastrophe, since all they have to rely on in is each other.

From the Paper:

"A tiny rural town populated by a few thousand people is vastly different from a sprawling urban city. In a big city, the population, buildings, and egos are all larger. But size is not the only difference between the two. People everywhere try to raise their children to hold the same values that they have, and it is not far-fetched to say that people who live in a small town generally have different values than those who have two million neighbors."
