We might like to think that these things all happened in the past and have no real effect on our present, but this is not the case. The fact that so many were murdered in this manner still has an effect on race relations and on attitudes toward the law in many parts of the country, especially in the South. The courage shown by Wells-Barnett in her writings is something we need today as well, and this is an important lesson in a time when many in the media are interested only in getting along and in avoiding any confrontation that might threaten their bottom line. Wells-Barnett serves as an example to be followed and also offers lessons that need to learned over and over again in any society that pretends to be just."
