813 words (approx. 3.3 pages) | 3 sources | MLA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the rhetorical device used, the setting and the narrative style of Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway". The paper relates that, at first glance, this novel appears to be fragmented and disjointed, but then the reader comes to understand that the literary technique used fits well with the subject and the characters. The paper outlines the wide array of topics that Woolf covers on this fictional day and concludes that this novel has a complexity which belies its simple storyline.

From the Paper:

"Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, a 1920s English feminist novel, attempts to account for every minute related in the work. It is a rhetorical device not seen often in such novels. It is tedious at times and seems contrived, which may be the reason such a device is seldom used. She began the novel in 1922 and finished it in London in 1924.
"The setting is a day in June of 1923 in an affluent neighborhood of London and is told in the immediate tense. However there are flashbacks to a time in the 1890s when the protagonist, Clarissa Dalloway, was 18. Also, during a dream sequence, Peter envisions the solitary traveler and the novel is related in the present tense."
