This paper discusses how, throughout "Beloved", motherly figures are portrayed as being loving, responsible and sympathetic, among other traits. It looks at how Toni Morrison develops these characters with great respect and reverence for their role in the novel, as well as in the lives of other characters and how in Baby Suggs, Sethe's mother, Sethe, Amy and even in the brief description of Amy's mother, we see many identifiable motherly characteristics, although the degree of severity of these traits varies with each character.

"As readers, the first motherly figure we really encounter in the novel is Baby Suggs (Jenny Whitlow). As a mother, she has great insight into others pain and grief and is initially presented to us as an extremely strong character -- all eight of her children have disappeared, and she is still alive. Baby Suggs, was bought out of slavery by her son, Halle, "a man so in love with his mother he gave up five years of Sabbaths just to see her sit down for a change." Caring deeply for Halle, Baby Suggs only allowed him to buy her freedom because it had meant so much to him. She was convinced that she was too old to really need freedom, which"
