Mothers and Women in "Beloved"

This paper discusses how, throughout "Beloved", motherly figures are portrayed as being loving, responsible and sympathetic, among other traits. It looks at how Toni Morrison develops these characters with great respect and reverence for their role in the novel, as well as in the lives of other characters and how in Baby Suggs, Sethe's mother, Sethe, Amy and even in the brief description of Amy's mother, we see many identifiable motherly characteristics, although the degree of severity of these traits varies with each character.

As a mother, she has great insight into others pain and grief and is initially presented to us as an extremely strong character -- all eight of her children have disappeared, and she is still alive.
