Although Montessori's method of education did not begin to gain mainstream popularity until five years after her death, the philosophies inherent in her teaching are still widely used today. The paper examines how Montessori stressed the importance of the child becoming dependent on its environment and to have freedom. The paper discusses the points of Montessori's teaching that the author of the book, Paula Polk Lilliard, thought were most important such as the physical care of the individual and the environment.

"Paula Polk Lilliard's book, 'Montessori: A Modern Approach' esteems both the woman she worked with and the educational system she spent a lifetime creating. Lilliard opens her book with a brief history of the stellar accomplishments of Montessori, and then dips briefly into critic William Kilpatrick's opinion of Montessori's work. 'Kilpatrick's book,' she writes, 'is important in the history of Montessori in the U.S., not only because it is credited as the strongest single influence for this country, but also because some of the areas of disagreement it outlined are the principal ones still being advanced.' (9) Lilliard claims Kilpatrick's book peaked 'the tremendous outpouring of energy that had created such a startling beginning for Montessori.' (15)"
