It strives to substitute fact for fiction in the great American myth of our Pilgrim forefathers' (and foremothers') experiences in the New World. More importantly, it seeks to look at the factually complex and morally ambiguous events that came after that First Thanksgiving and illuminate the ways in which the Pilgrims and their children maintained more than fifty years of peace with the Wampanoag Indians before that peace devolved into one of the deadliest wars ever fought on American soil. In that light, the author says, "Instead of the story we already know, it becomes the story we need to know.""
