2,412 words (approx. 9.6 pages) | 0 sources | 2004 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper examines how "Lord of the Flies" is a book that shows the evil and goodness inside every one and how they may arise from each one in different ways. It illustrates a fundamental aspect of human behavior. It looks at how Golding shows that even boys have primitive feelings of cruelty, savagery and love; he does so through the use of symbolism, metaphors, themes and through different characters. The paper also shows how, throughout the book, Golding uses many positive and negative themes to give the idea that evil is present as a destructive influence in man, which works against the force of wisdom and civilization.

From the Paper:

"Lord of the Flies" is a book which shows the evil and goodness inside every one and how they may arise from each one in different ways; it illustrates a fundamental aspect of human behaviour. Golding shows that even boys have primitive feelings of cruelty, savagery and love; he does so through the use of symbolism, metaphors, themes and through different characters. Throughout the book Golding uses many positive and negative themes to give the idea that evil is present as a destructive influence in man which works against the force of wisdom and civilisation. Almost no one can escape from this destructive influence that may corrode our souls. Golding starts and ends with pessimism, the book starts with the aeroplane crash, left alone on an island without grownups, in such a situation man is shown to revert to his natural self."
