A commentary on the short story by John Updike, "A & P".
Written in 2008; 1,103 words; 1 sources; APA; $ 38.95
Paper Summary:
The paper notes that, in his short story "A & P", John Updike paints a very colorful picture through his narrative of how attractive the girls of summer are, and how obsessive the protagonist is when laying eyes on these females. The paper comments that the story is designed by Updike to lead the reader into a place where he or she suspects what might happen in the end, to build up the drama, and at the conclusion of the story, let the air out of the balloon.
From the Paper:
"It is interesting that Sammy screws up with HiHo crackers, which are kind of middle class, as juxtaposed with Ritz Crackers, seen symbolically as a more upper class food choice. But later in the story, readers learn that Queenie, the drop-dead gorgeous girl that Sammy is totally attracted to, has chosen "Kingfish Fancy Herring Snacks in Pure Sour Cream," which sounds like a much more top-shelf item than HiHo crackers. Hence, Updike has positioned Queenie and Sammy at opposite ends of the socioeconomic scale, making Sammy even more the underdog than he really probably was."
