1,468 words (approx. 5.9 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2001 United States

Paper Summary:

In this paper, the writer reviews the book, "I, Rigoberta Menchu" that offers this Quiche Indian woman's testimony about her experiences, and the conditions she and the rest of the Guatemalan Indians endure. The writer describes how Menchu's experiences as one of the impoverished Indian majority, compounded by the increasing repression of the government forces to maintain the status quo, fostered her development into a rebel organizer.

From the Paper:

"Although they are the ethnic majority of Guatemala, the indigenous people of the nation have suffered oppression, both economic and political, at the hands of the minority in power. The book, I, Rigoberta Menchu, is the testimony of a Quiche Indian woman about her experiences, and the conditions she and the rest of the Guatemalan Indians endure. In her account, Rigoberta explains the difficulties of merely surviving as an Indian, as well as witnessing the persecution and horrific deaths of her family members, as they initially created and then solidified her commitment to the life as a rebel organizer."
