Paper Summary:

This paper is a review of the first part of Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities" - "Recalled to Life". The author focuses on the theme of resurrection that is a strong and distinct theme found throughout the novel. The author describes the various characters in the book, how they relate to the theme of resurrection and to each other. The writer continues and analysis in detail each of the characters, their interaction between each other and their behavior.

From the Paper:

"Like Dr. Manette, Madame Defarge is another character that realizes her agency through her personal history. Initially, she seems dead since her only mode of communication was coughing and gesturing to her husband. In one instance demonstrating her taciturn nature, Madame Defarge "said nothing when her lord came in, but coughed just one grain of cough... This in combination with the lifting...of her eyebrows...suggested to [him] that he [should look around the shop for any new customers that visited while he was away]" (Dickens 35). Because she appears sedentary and mute, the reader consequently may brand her as powerless since speech and mobility are means of asserting power. Furthermore, she also seems lifeless because she does not enliven other people, radiate life in her personality, nor produce life through children. Since Madame Defarge appears lifeless, one would consequently deem her as the opposite of life--death."
