"Gulliver's Travels"
An analysis of "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift.
1,000 words (approx. 4 pages) | 4 sources | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper defines "Gulliver's Travels" as essentially a satiric commentary on European lifestyle by the author, Jonathan Swift. The paper relates how within the context of the book, Swift discusses issues such as politics, government, philosophy, war, law, mathematics and science. The paper notes how Swift also discusses issues such as aging, death and immortality throughout Gulliver's voyages. The paper explains how the three voyages represent three distinct views of aging and death. The paper examines the Lilliputians, the Houyhnhnms and the Struldbruggs.

From the Paper:

"Lemuel Gulliver's first voyage takes him to the land of Lilliput, where he encounters a race of tiny beings, only a few inches high, yet physically identical to humans in every way. He soon discovers that the Lilliputians are "most excellent Mathematicians, and arrived to great perfection in Mechanicks by the Countenance and Encouragement of the Emperor, who is a renowned Patron of Learning" (Book1 Ch.1). Yet, Lilliput may be seen as a micro European society, for although they posses great intellect, they too appear burdened with greed, selfishness, and superstition."
