From the Paper:
"L. V. Miles rescued his nephew "Boobie" Miles from a life of poverty and discrimination that he himself had endured when he was growing up in "Niggertown." L.V had no contact with whites except during the summer when he played summer league baseball. He went to a colored school and swam at the colored swimming pool. He played at the colored park. He played basketball at Bethune colored high school. His mother was buried in the black cemetery. Of course, he remembered cross burnings. The one aspect of this dismal life that kept him going while he lived in Crane, Texas, was sports. In 1961 and 1962 the basketball team at Bethune was the Class B state champion of Texas for "colored" schools. The white folks in town went to Niggertown to see it. L.V. had been on the team. "
