Published on: Jan 01, 2008

Paper Summary:

This paper provides an analysis of Stendhal's critique of French society during the French Restoration in 'The Red and the Black.' The focus of the analysis is on Julien Sorel, the protagonist who it is argued suffers from a Napoleon complex.

From the Paper:

"Julien Sorel, the protagonist of Stendhal's critique of early nineteenth-century France in 'The Red and the Black' rises from poor and uneducated origins to the heights of Parisian society only to endure a murder trial for the shooting of Mme De Renal. In a corrupt and hypocritical society, Stendhal's main theme appears to be that no individual that is a product of such a society can be without corruption or hypocrisy."
