1,730 words (approx. 6.9 pages) | 0 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

The report discusses life in the third world, particularly the life of Dr. Paul Farmer, who lived in Haiti. It describes some of his experiences living there and the interactions that he had with other people living in the area. The paper describes how Farmer interacts with his patients as a doctor, his experiences as an anthropology student and his philosophy on medicine.

From the Paper:

"Paul Farmer is an individual whose life's work is to connect with people who are very different from his own, only to ensure that they remain healthy and are given the best chance for survival. Farmer's story is one of uniqueness in his own right, having grown up on a bus and a house boat, allowing him the ability to adapt almost anywhere, and serving as a reminder that even his hardships callow in the face of the poverty of the third world. Farmer learned from an early age the usefulness of adapting and accommodating change, being able to focus on certain aspects of what he wants to do and dedicate himself to achieving those things. Farmer's methods for connecting with people vastly different from him is something that we can all aspire to, however it is not something that can be easily accomplished."
