↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper relates that Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" is more against the very institution of marriage than it is against any brutality on the part of the husband. The author points out that Chopin genuinely believed that women are made to be sensuous and independent and thus she wanted to empower women and to awaken them to realize their sexual desires and needs. The paper concludes that, although Chopin's story is powerful and moving, it seems to lack depth.

From the Paper:

"When Mrs. Louise Mallard, who has a heart condition, is told her husband has died in a train accident, at first she is consumed with grief, but soon other thoughts start creeping in and she feels a growing sense of freedom. Now after so many years of being a wife and a mother, she will not have to live her life for anyone else; she will not have to submit to anyone's wishes but her own. She begins to feel a "monstrous joy" at the thought of her new found freedom and the days that lay ahead. Unfortunately as she was building up her new future, the door opens and her husband walks in."
