"Children of the New World"
A review of Assia Djebar's novel "Children of the New World".
1,209 words (approx. 4.8 pages) | 3 sources | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how Assia Djebar's novel "Children of the New World", despite its being a work of fiction, contributes powerfully and in many important ways to our knowledge of the Algerian Experience. It looks at how the novel also powerfully describes the circumstances and the high human cost, of the Algerian War for Independence in particular, which lasted for six years, taking place between late 1954 and late 1962.

From the Paper:

"The female characters depicted by Djebar are for the most part average Algerian women who have simply been drawn into the vortex of war; politics; resistance, and revolution. The most interesting and moving aspect of this novel, in fact, is the way in which the author shows these female characters acting in support of and solidarity with one another. In this manner Djebar's Children of the New World (1962) traces the interlocking lives and stories of these rural Algerian women who, even in the worst of circumstances, can still manage to encourage and empower each other.
