Paper Summary:

This paper reviews Sarah Dunant's book, "The Birth of Venus", a mystery set in historically rich Florence, about a Renaissance woman surpassing her station in life and finding the peace and love for which she longed. The author summarizes the book, recounting the main character, Alessandra Cecchi's way into womanhood. The author also addresses some of the themes in the book, many of which, we still wrestle with in our current time.

From the Paper:

"Two young Sisters are given the duty of preparing Sister Lucrezia's body to be buried. Sister Lucrezia, who had spent thirty years in the convent in piety and prayer, had been believed to pass away from an agonizing breast tumor. As the Sisters began to remove her habit, they are surprised to find a pig's bladder hidden beneath the habit to provide evidence of a tumor Sister Lucrezia apparently did not suffer. Compounding their initial shock of the pig bladder is a tattoo, which is revealed when the deceased Sister's shift is torn open in a single rip."
