"Beloved"

"Beloved"
An analysis of the book, "Beloved", by Toni Morrison.
2,019 words (approx. 8.1 pages) | 6 sources | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper analyzes how "Beloved" is about how the traumatized survive after their ordeal. The writer proposes that the novel is about keeping the past alive, lest it be repeated, regardless of how much people want to let it go and how much pain it causes to remember. The paper describes how Toni Morrison uses the novel as a vehicle to impose this painful memory not only on the characters, but for all the readers to finish the book with a strong recognition of the suffering slavery brought to an entire culture. The paper analyzes how, throughout the story, there are passages that relate to memories and the idea of remembering and forgetting.

From the Paper:

"It is clear to the readers from the very beginning that Sethe is not, and should not, be able to forget. She has to remember and confront her nightmares in order to go on with her life. This is clearly evident because of the so-called "thought pictures" that haunt her of young men hanging from trees in Sweet Home. However, the memories are transformed into something more palatable. "Boys hanging from the most beautiful sycamores in the world. It shamed her remembering the wonderful soughing trees rather than the boys." In this sense, even the arrival of Paul D is a mixed blessing. She is glad to see and not glad to see him for the same reason: he is a tie to the past. As she states, "But it's where we were and it comes back whether we want it to or not" (14)."
