This paper discusses the Book of Jonah in the Hebrew Bible as a satirical narrative. It approaches the biblical story from a literary perspective rather than a theological perspective.
From the Paper:
"The book of Jonah in the Hebrew Bible is the blue fish amongst a dozen gold fish. Of the twelve Books of the Minor Prophets, Jonah is the only one that is a narrative instead of a decree. Why did the unknown author of Jonah decide to flout tradition? What point is he or she trying to make? I will argue that Jonah is not only a narrative, but it is a satirical narrative wherein the author intends to teach the Israelites that their fanatical devotion to nationalism and Jewish exclusivity is leading them to be false to themselves and their God."
