The chapter launches directly into an example of a crucial 1965 meeting in which then Undersecretary of State George Ball cogently summarized the difficulties the United States would face in the then-looming Vietnam war, only to have his analysis politely ignored by President Johnson, who had already decided in favor of escalation."
