↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper looks at William Manchester's cultural history of the Middle Ages, "A World Lit Only by Fire". It discusses how he shows that although certain aspects of medieval life were dark, it did not mean that the era was absent of learning. It also examines how he shows that important social and economic developments advanced human history and provided the foundations of the Renaissance. It also shows how in order to illustrate this, Manchester focuses not on creating a chronology, but on organizing his book in a series of topics and overviews such as learning, clothing, religion and illness.

From the Paper:

"Another Medieval paradox is evident in the architecture of the period. Again, on one hand, great cathedrals and structures of faith spiraled into the skies, and many castles offered impressive fortifications and structures. But outside of the church and the economic dominance of powerful rulers and lords, practical developments such as irrigation and sanitation that had flourished in Rome were lost. Only later, with the rise of a viable middle class through the formation of guilds did such practical areas of learning and science began to flourish once again. "
