This paper discusses the themes of identity, emotional and physical disconnectedness, particularly from the perspective of the one not belonging, are explored on three levels in Tessa McWatt's novel 'This Body'.
Victoria, the main character, in particular experiences the discomfort of not belonging in her country of residence, not belonging in her relationships, and not belonging in her family. As a result of childhood experiences she physically distances herself from her family only to suffer another loss and another sense of disconnectedness.
