'The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson'
A review of 'The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson' by Mark Twain
1,640 words (approx. 6.6 pages) | 5 sources | MLA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper takes a look at Mark Twain's novel, 'The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson'. The paper focuses specifically on the issue of identity. The paper discusses how people develop a sense of identity and how this sense of identity is created and shaped by other people.

From the Paper:

"A person's identity would be based on a range of traits such as gender, culture, family, social status, interests, and personality. In the time that Mark Twain was writing, identity was based more on gender, cultural, and social characteristics than it is today. However, it was also a time when ideas were changing. In addition, people were aware of how their identity was judged by others and were able to manipulate how others view them. This created a situation where identity was in a state of confusion. There are numerous examples of identity being confused in the novel. The intelligent and educated Wilson is mistaken for an idiot. This shows that intelligence and education is not a clear sign of identity. Roxy is one-sixteenth black and is a slave, but has so little coloring that she is able to pass herself off to others as white. This shows that culture and appearance can be used to influence one's own identity. "
