The Romanic author and poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge endeavors to answer this question in his essay, Philosophic Definitons of a Poem and Poetry. Coleridge's approach is a combination of an examination of the purpose of poetry as well as the humanistic qualities of the poet. Coleridge examines what poetry is, what a poet is and what the cumulative result of answering these two questions."
