Paper Summary:
The writer shows that Pierce feels that a responsibility of higher education is "to train a skilled, intelligent, creative, and responsible workforce." (p. 57) This includes not only giving today's college graduates skills not only in their chosen field, but also the broader skill of being able to gather, analyze, and synthesize information.
From the Paper:
"Pierce also feels that individuals need to be taught how to search for "ideas and information on solving social, economic, political, and scientific problems," (p. 57) and he relies on higher education to provide resources for this. He asserts that problems such as pollution, poverty, crime, racism, sexism, and even something as mundane as genealogy research can all be researched by using the resources available at almost any college or university. Although Pierce realizes that higher education alone cannot be held responsible to solve these problems, he believes that they are an essential part of the process."
