Paper Summary:

This paper discusses Mike Rose's essay, "I Just Wanna be Average" (from "Lives on the Boundary") in which Rose explains the dilemma that he has endured as a vocational student. The paper discusses the stigma that a vocational education leaves on its students and how it potentially damages their identity, who they are and where they belong in society.

From the Paper:

"Not fitting in because of their vocational student stereotype, the students began to identify with one another. Even though they all had different social backgrounds, they had one thing in common, they were written off as students. Most students begin the identity process as they begin school and the process continues until adolescence. The vocational students had only each other to reflect with and they all knew the way each other felt as to the attitude in which their teachers schooled them. The students understood each other even though they were all culturally different. Some students gained social acceptance because they were athletes or because they had an intellectual manner about them, but it was segregation as a vocational student that joined them together."
