"Walther's primary argument is that, in Pecola's society, white consumerist culture determines the standards of beauty. She believes these standards are learned primarily through the movies. For instance, Mr. Henry compliments Claudia and Frieda by comparing them to Greta Garbo and Ginger Rogers. Pauline is also deeply affected by what she sees on the big screen. During pregnancy, she watches movies as means of escaping the misery of her life. Whenever Pauline judges her own beauty, she must look to white actresses as means of comparison. Thus, Walther states that Pauline heavily internalizes an artificial and in-absolute beauty scale from white culture."
