1,183 words (approx. 4.7 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper looks at Dr. Gregor Wolbring's article "Why Disability Rights Movements Do Not Support Euthanasia: Safeguards Broken Beyond Repair" where he lobbies against key elements of the right to die movement. The paper explains the author's fear that legalization of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide will unfairly target the physically disabled, mentally and/or emotionally challenged and those financially stressed. The paper demonstrates the effectiveness of Dr. Wolbring's argument and explains that the effectiveness is due to the credibility he passionately establishes for himself as a qualified expert on the subject at hand, the ample support he gives to back up his claim and the appropriate forum he chooses that allows his argument to thrive.

From the Paper:

"The aforementioned comments refer to the closely related issues of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. Euthanasia's original goal and purpose is a painless killing to end suffering. Physician assisted suicide differs in that it involves intentional help to terminate a life at the request of the affected individual. Both practices have spawned much intense debate of the right to die movement over the past few decades. Roots of these issues can be clearly traced to a broader timeless argument; namely, to what extent should human life be protected and under what conditions should this protection become operative? From philosophers and religious leaders to members of the medical or legal fields, most everyone demonstrates a personal or professional opinion, or a dominant inclination at the very least, of this controversial topic."
