"The aforementioned comments refer to the closely related issues of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. Euthanasia's original goal and purpose is a painless killing to end suffering. Physician assisted suicide differs in that it involves intentional help to terminate a life at the request of the affected individual. Both practices have spawned much intense debate of the right to die movement over the past few decades. Roots of these issues can be clearly traced to a broader timeless argument; namely, to what extent should human life be protected and under what conditions should this protection become operative? From philosophers and religious leaders to members of the medical or legal fields, most everyone demonstrates a personal or professional opinion, or a dominant inclination at the very least, of this controversial topic."
