↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper examines Laura Blumenfeld's article "The Apology," which centers around the issue is terrorism as it is practiced today in the Middle East and the tactics used today are used as a way of making a political statement and bringing about political change. It discusses how the article personalizes terrorism in two ways, by describing a victim known to the writer and by bringing the terrorist into open view as well and finding ways in which he is human. It analyzes how the entire article raises a number of issues about terrorism, including its basic irrationality and how terrorism is beyond reason and beyond persuasion.

From the Paper:

"The article also shows that much of terrorism is actually inherited. the shooter in this case describes the beginning of the state of Israel as if he were there, but he was not born yet. He has been told of that event by his parents, who were forced to move from their home in Palestine and who resent this fact. The young man has clearly been steeped in this resentment and the hatreds it inspires for years until he acts, becoming an instrument for the anger of his parents. He may not realize that this is so, and they also do not realize that it is so, but it seems likely to be the case."
