Paper Summary:
The paper explains that Monique Wittig, in her article "One is Not Born a Woman", describes woman as an oppressed class and as exploited by men. Wittig claims that the only way to free woman is "to suppress men as a class" and this can be achieved by a political struggle. In addition, the paper discusses the meanings of the words feminist, woman and lesbianism.
From the Paper:
"The word "feminist" derives from the French word "femme" which means woman, and it means "someone who fights for women" (One is not Born a Woman 268). Wittig explains that the reason why they chose this word "feminist" is not because they wanted to identify themselves with "the oppressor's" - men's - definition, but because they wanted to emphasize the fact that this movement has a long political history; that is to say women are identified by men as 'women' is a long political concern."
