This paper summarizes an article that describes an experiment to determine the efficacy of inferring the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary words from the context of a short story in which they appear. "The authors of this article suggest that the context in which a new word appears is not always helpful to students who are learning words in a second language. Frantzen (2003) states that the difficulty that students may have making inferences might come from the clarity of context cues, which might not be helpful if the text is vague (p. 168) or difficult (p. 169). Frantzen discusses the difficulties in running inferencing studies, explaining the advantages and disadvantages that come with using real words or pseudo words to test the efficacy of inference when understanding..."
