Instead, she allows for the possibility of a "feminist gaze"; one in which the female exercises free agency to be the initiator instead of resigning herself to the objectification consistent with misogynistic literature. She then puts forth the theory that Carter has used The Company of Wolves to introduce the importance of touch as a woman's primary method in which to view the world, marking a difference between male and female sensation. She calls touch "the ultimate metaphor for Carter's incorporation of the patriarchal into herself.""
