Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the article, "Music, Space, Identity Global Youth/Local Others in Bangalore, India," written by Arun Saldanha. The paper discusses how Saldanha suggests that the elite youth of Bangalore, India experience modernity through imported Western pop music and that this identification with the West through music reinforces Indian power relations and the struggle to create a complete and uncompromised identity.

From the Paper:

"Saldanha's article makes many strong points and is structured persuasively to make one think it is solely Western pop music that is the cause behind fragmented identities in post-colonial India. The article details the progression of Western music from it's manufacturing in America to its importing into India and how the youth then gain access to it. The article is also keen to point out the role music plays aside from a source of listening pleasure, but also an inspiration to imagine other spaces and a catalyst in creating spaces where one can enjoy the music. These points stress the idea that the globalization of pop music destroys local, cultural identity and is reason for a fractured sense of self among the youth of Bangalore."
