Paper Summary:
The paper examines Thomas L. Friedman's article "A Biblical Seven Years" that is an evaluation of China's ability to turn into this century's rising star in the world economy. The paper looks at the history of China and how it led to the growth of the nationalist culture. The paper reveals that China has surpassed the United States technologically and may become the greatest economic force the world has seen to date. The paper relates that in a sense, China has already surpassed the United States in many areas and this is something that our own nationalism will eventually rally against, and perhaps even fear.
From the Paper:
"The News Article, "A Biblical Seven Years," by Thomas L. Freidman, appeared in the New York Times on August 28, 2008 and is an evaluation of China's ability to turn into this century's Rising Star in the world Economy. Freidman cites the amazing amount of labor and effort the Chinese government put into the seven years of time to create, or rather, recreate Beijing for public world view as an example of this.
""China did not build the magnificent $43 billion infrastructure for these games, or put on the unparalleled opening and closing ceremonies, simply by the dumb luck of discovering oil. No, it was the culmination of seven years of national investment, planning, concentrated state power, national mobilization and hard work. (Friedman)"
"In doing so he also points out that China has also surpassed the Untied States technologically. The Olympics may have been the catalyst for Beijing, but there has always been an effort to work hard and succeed in China that has been driven by its government and supported, for the most part, by its people."
