Paper Summary:

This paper examines the tyranny of the minority by the majority in the United States of America. The author examines and contrasts the faults and strengths of the Constitution via the ideas behind "The Federalist Papers" by James Madison and "Democracy in America" by Alexis de Tocqueville.

From the Paper:

"One of the most influential Founders, James Madison published thirty essays know jointly today as The Federalist Papers (IA Reader 132). Madison published The Federalist Papers to convince the voters of New York to ratify the constitution and usher in a form of government that was truly for the people. In Federalist No. 51, Madison explored the checks and balances of the United States government. He was concerned about the possible tyranny of the majority over the minority but believed that Constitution was able to check the power of the majority."
