The Prozac Generation

The Prozac Generation
Argues that doctors in the United States prescribe medication too freely to school-age children.
1,592 words (approx. 6.4 pages) | 10 sources | MLA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper argues that there needs to be a far sharper dividing line between those children who truly need medication to live normal lives and those whose behavior frustrates parents and doctors. It shows that doctors in the United States prescribe medication without proper diagnosis and that pills and psychiatric evaluation are not necessarily the answer. The paper questions why we need to quiet and sedate children to the point of lack of response and why we can't let children behave like children.

From the Paper:

"Pills and drops are not always the answer. In fact, they may SELDOM be the answer. "Behavior problems" is a given with growing children as they flex new muscles and exercise growing brain cells and awareness of who they are (and even who they are not). It seems almost too blatant (and certainly controversial) but has anyone ever given thought to the possibility that some angry frustrated parents are using the pharmaceutical industry (and vice versa) to change children's behavior?"
