Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the negative impact that gambling has on individuals, families and society as a whole. It argues that the benefits of developing casinos are short lived and are insignificant in comparison to the downfalls they bring on society. It specifically focuses on the social and economic problems that are increased with the development of casinos.
From the Paper:
"Not only does gambling increase local crime, but it is also very destructive to individuals and families. Many would argue that they expect to lose money in return for the good time they have gambling, and winning is a fun challenge and an added bonus. These people believe gambling is just a harmless pastime. This is where it stops for some, but for a large number of people who eventually turn into what is called a problem gambler, this is only where it begins. Whether or not an addicted gambler will lose is not the question, it is only a matter of time. When gamblers lose, they reject their losses and many try to win their money back by continuing to gamble. Several people in turn lose their money for rent, food, or other living expenses. This is when problem gambling begins. People aspire to win back their lost money, but they continue to lose. Though they may win from time to time, in the long run the average gambler will leave the casino losing close to 85% of the time (Walsh16). The number of compulsive gamblers and problem gamblers increases substantially when the number of casinos in a given area increases (Loirenze67). "The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders characterizes pathological gambling as a behavior that compromises, disrupts, or damages personal, family and vocational pursuits" (Lorenze66). Someone who is addicted to gambling could often times sacrifice his or her family's income and belongings for the desire to win."
