Argumentative Essay # 58759 :: The Media and Politicians vs. the People
An analysis of the role played by the press in the relationship between the politician and the people.
Written in 2002; 1,479 words; 5 sources; MLA; $ 48.95
Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the assumption that the press reports all news of importance to the people, even if it harms the government's interests and the interests of the President. While the press in democratic countries often does represent the interest of the people and act as a "watchdog," the fact is that the government does place direct and indirect controls on what the media publishes through the creation of news. The paper contends that, accordingly, news may be deliberately created, if not invented, in order to distract the media's attention away from stories that are harmful to the government's political image. In such cases, the media have no choice but to turn their attention to the newer and more important item of 'created' news. The paper summarizes that, while the American mainstream media do enjoy much greater freedom of expression than the media in undemocratic countries, the reality is that the mainstream media are often used by the government to promote its own interests and to turn the public's attention away from issues that could place the government in a sensitive political position.
From the Paper:
"Countries such as Egypt, on the other hand, follow the authoritarian press model in which the government has control over what is reported and what is not, both through censorship and through the fact that it does own the press houses. Here, both the government and the press claim that the press is free and democratic but the public usually knows that this is not true and usually suspects that there is a great deal of important news that the press is either not reporting or only reporting from the positive side that will benefit the government. Thus, the public usually believes that the United States has a free press while countries like Egypt do not. However, the common assumption that the American press has complete freedom of expression is a popular misconception among citizens of such non democratic countries as Egypt."
