The Death Penalty

The Death Penalty
An argument against the use of the death penalty to punish criminals.
2,390 words (approx. 9.6 pages) | 11 sources | MLA | 2007

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses some of the many controversial issues surrounding the death penalty. It looks at the right of the criminal justice system to decide the fate of any person's life, whether death penalty sentencing is a fair process across gender, race and age and how monetarily worth-while executions are. The paper also discusses how effective the death penalty is as a deterrence of heinous crimes. The paper argues that the death penalty is not the best solution to deal with criminals.

From the Paper:

"There is the question of how costly the death penalty is. The cost in Florida alone is $51 million a year above what it cost to punish all the first degree murders sentenced to life without parole (Death Penalty Information Center, Fact Sheet, August 2005). This information is based on the 44 executions that Florida has carried out since 1976, and that amounts to a coast of $24 million for each execution, (Palm Beach Post, Jan 4, 2000). The cost of capital cases in Kansas are 70% more expensive than comparable non capital cases. That percent is including the cost of incarceration, (Kansas Performance Audit Report, Dec 2003). The death penalty carries a hefty price tag on it, but can you but a price on serving justice for those capital crimes that are committed?"
