"The issue of capital punishment has been debated from a number of perspectives. One of the most recent assaults on the death penalty has come from those who believe that the punishment has not been applied equally and that there is a racial component in the way some offenders are treated by the system. To date, this concept has not prevailed with the U.S. Supreme Court, and the major case that reached the Supreme Court based on this theory failed to persuade the Justices. Death penalty opponents have cited a variety of statistics as to reasons why the death penalty is racially discriminatory, raising the issue in court and before the legislature in an attempt to change the system or do away with the death penalty altogether, so far without success.The statistics show that black murderers are far more likely..."
