The following paper examines both sides of the ongoing debate over prostitution by considering the situation of "Joe" and his interlude with a prostitute. The paper argues on the one hand that prostitution is bad and clearly not a victimless crime and then switches to consider the other point of view whereby consensual intimacy between two adults is entirely permissible in a free society even if it offends the sensibilities of radical, dogmatic feminists.

"It is often said that prostitution is the oldest profession; it may also be said that solicitation is at least as old as prostitution. In any event, prostitution has long been a serious social blight in American society and solicitation is held in equal disdain. Within America, it has long been noted that prostitution (if not solicitation) is a wide-spread and odious practice (324 U.S. 193, 2005, para.1-8). Suffice it to say, solicitation is held in equally low regard and this is the crime Joe has committed - even though he has offered her no money. Rather, his statement that he has no money to offer her is not at all exculpatory and suggests that he is not in the least unhappy about spending time with this lady."
