↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper presents an overview of the arguments in favor of and against homosexual marriage. The writer looks at the issues, including religious views, political arguments, and the legal aspect. Finally, the writer discusses the issue in terms of any democratic country and looks at what the majority wants in America.

From the Paper:

"In the fourth argument presented widely, it is argued that marriage is defined strictly as the union between men and women. This is patently untrue, as the dictionary itself declares that marriage can be either "1. a) The legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife" or "1. d) A union between two persons having the customary but usually not the legal force of marriage: [as in] a same-sex marriage" or "3. A close union" (American Heritage Dictionary) The third definition is no recent invention, and counts back at least to the time of Shakespeare. Certainly same-sex unions can be very close, and thus be literally referred to as marriages. However, this might be considered to be word games, and one is certain the detractors would continue to say that homosexual marriages have in no society ever historically been recognized. However, once again there are factual errors in this argument. Primary sources clearly state that same-sex equivalents of marriage were practiced (albeit rarely) in Greece, Rome, and during the early church history."
