Punishment vs. Rehabilitation

Punishment vs. Rehabilitation
A look at the debate concerning the use of punishment vs. rehabilitation for convicted offenders.
1,807 words (approx. 7.2 pages) | 6 sources | APA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses the arguments for and against the death penalty and explores the option of a life sentence without parole possibility. Rehabilitation options for criminals that include drug programs and religious-based rehabilitation are examined. The paper considers extreme cases where there is no hope of any type of rehabilitation and contends that using rehabilitation programs for most prisoners can reduce the taxpayers' expenses for prisons as well reduce overcrowding of the system.

From the Paper:

"The modern day world has viewed many differences of opinion in regards to the sentence and punishment of convicted offenders. Many believe that the ancient saying of "an eye for an eye," should be reinstated, and others believe that no matter how violent the crime, there is always a chance for rehabilitation. The law fortunately does not allow for vigilante justice, so it is up to the court system to decide the punishment. As for the maximum punishment allowable by law, the death penalty is still very active in many states. For very violent offenders the argument is there for families and loved ones of the victims that they should be put to death. Not everyone agrees with this stance of instilling the death penalty."
