"Audre Lorde calls on her readers to make two recognitions in regard to women's social and cultural experience and poetry. Firstly, they must recognize that an oppressive Europe-based model of power has historically "programmed" all members of society to view each other not as equals, but rather to break down human difference into hierarchal the categories of superior and inferior. Within this system, the category of superior, which is considered right and good, is defined as white and male. All ideas and people non-white and non-male are viewed under the system as inferior and marginalized into the grouping "the other", managed, according to Lorde, by mandating separateness and ignoring, silencing, or destroying. Lorde calls this treatment the "institutionalized rejection of difference". The first half of this essay explores how this western culture has historically treated women's poetry, lesbian poetry, and the erotic within poetry. Secondly, Lorde encourages her reader to subvert this oppressive system. This happens when her readers (characteristically women, but not necessarily so) realize their social and cultural experience has encouraged and nurtured the value of separateness. Once realized, each person must individually scrutinize their self using their "inner light" to uncover how the system has forced them to participate in the politics of difference, then tease out their inner treasures through poetry writing. The sharing of poetry allows relation across gaps of human difference, as it opens the lines of communication. This changes the world and day-to-day life, making the personal, political."
