Written in 2009; 2,329 words; 10 sources; APA; $ 71.95
Paper Summary:
This paper looks at how disability labels such as learning disability, behavioral disorders and attention disorders are commonly flung about. The writer argues that labels themselves have a negative impact not only on academics but also on other spheres of a child's abilities. The writer notes that it is important to label in order to provide children with the educational assistance they require, but that the overuse and misuse of labels is as harmful as, if not more harmful than, not labeling at all. The labeling theory and its effects on children as well as research dome on the application of labels, positive as well as negative is presented and the conclusion reached that labeling in all forms and under the current system is far more harmful than beneficial.

This paper included an annotated bibliography.

From the Paper:
"Childhood and adolescence are particularly fragile and developmental years. Direct effects on development have life long consequences that may be unalterable. Children labeled at his age may derive their identity from such labeling which would determine the future course of action they may take.
"While labeling a child as gifted or talented has shown that children are more willing to work harder and live up to expectations, the downside is that labeling may cause a child to lose faith in their own abilities, at such a young age; they are more likely to believe what they are told as opposed to what they feel. Furthermore, labeling may cause children to under perform on purpose."
