An argument that it is necessary to look at culture, class and race when the issue of feminism is being discussed.

Paper Summary:
This paper argues that there needs to be a realistic understanding of how differences such as race, culture and class impact on individual women and their needs as regards the feminist outlook for their lives. The writer uses as example the case of the aboriginal women in Canada, and explains how cultural norms and family sanctions prohibit them from talking about abuse. The writer concludes that Women's Studies and Feminism need to step up and understand these racial and cultural differences.
From the Paper:
"In an article by Bhavnani entitled 'Women's Studies and its Interconnection with Race, Ethnicity and Sexuality,' she believes that those very factors have been EDITed out of the Women's Studies agenda. Using the apt acronym of EDIT, She drives home the point that there has been a 'process of Erasure, Denial, Invisibly and Tokenism [which] combined together to reproduce one from of racism within Women's Studies" (1997, p. 27). This editing is often unconscious and a product of what has come to be referred to as 'white privilege' (Hays & Chang 2003), or as Bhavnani refers to it 'the rightness of whiteness' (1997, p. 24). This concept is also part of an almost all-pervasive denial of any sort of privilege associated with being white."
